After yesterday's loss in the first game of this series, the Braves will start Sheets, who has lost three of his last four outings. He allowed four home runs against the Dodgers on his last start, while allowing six runs and six innings. That was the third straight game where he allowed a homerun and his advanced numbers show that with a FIP/xFIP of 11.76/5.06, 4.10/2.91 and 5.69/5.72 on his last three outings. But his last outing was a weird one because he pitched in 6IP and only allowed runs in just two innings.
On the other side, San Francisco will start Vogelsong, who is also struggling right now and with two poor outings in a row. If his struggles against Washington were understandable, as the Nationals are a top team in this year's MLB season, the truth is that his terrible start in San Diego with 5 days rest on his last outing has no excuses. Vogelsong allowed 3 runs and 8 hits in just 3.0IP against the Padres and it looks that any ball in action equals a hit nowadays for him, as he had a .800 BABIP on this last outing against Dan Diego.
This is a great spot for Atlanta tonight to bounce back from yesterday's loss, in a game where they'll be facing a struggling LH pitcher, something that suits them as they are a great hitting team against LH pitchers. The other edge the Braves have for tonight will be in terms of bullpen, as the Braves have an elite bullpen and due to yesterday's clear loss, they didn't use their best bullpen guys last night in order to rest them for this contest. On the other hand, the Giants don't have a good bullpen and they had to use their best three bullpen guys Affeldt, Lopez and Romo last night, so when both struggling SP leave the mount today, Atlanta will have a clear pitching edge on this contest.
With both SP's being on a poor moment right now, the edge that Atlanta has in terms of bullpen may be the key for this contest. This is a great spot for Atlanta to bounce back from yesterday's loss and therefore, I'll be taking the Braves in here to pull the upset tonight.
