Olympic Games 07/31: Men's Basketball - United States vs Tunisia

Olympic Games - Men's Basketball - United States vs Tunisia

Projected line: United States by 60 points

This is surely the biggest spread I've ever bet on, but I think we have some value on the US team, as I expect them to win by 60 points or more. The line of 54 points certainly represents a lot of points and this means that the US team will have to win every quarter by an average of 15 points to get a win by 60 points. However, they have huge edges in every facet of the game.

Tunisia is coming from a tough battle against Nigeria, where they fought really hard the whole game. Nigeria is a pretty nasty physical team, so I don't think that with just one day to recover between games and with almost every player not used to play in such a tough spot, I don't think the Tunisian team will have anything left in the tank for today's game. Note that Tunisia scored just 15 points in the first half against Nigeria, who also dominated the glass with 20 offensive rebounds while forcing 12 steals and 19 turnovers from Tunisia. USA's biggest strength is their tremendous defensive pressure that tries to force turnovers and let's not forget that Tunisia's PG Marouan Kechrid played the entire game against Nigeria! He will surely ran out of gas in today's game.

The Tunisian team lost against China by 31 points in a friendly game a couple of weeks ago and they also lost by 39 points against Spain, just before this tournament, however Spain's defense isn't aggressive in pressuring the ball handler and Tunisia managed to "just" commit 13 turnovers, while grabbing 14 offensive rebounds (Pau Gasol played just 15 minutes, while his brother Marc played just 8 minutes).

If you think the US team will feel sorry for crushing Tunisia, think twice. Do you really believe Westbrook, Harden or any other bench player won't take advantage of extended playing time to make a statement today, especially when they are being compared to the 1992 Dream Team, who crushed every team in sight? Therefore, I believe Tunisia will get absolutely crushed on this contest and so, I'll take the United States to cover the spread in here.

Olympic Games 07/31: Brazil vs Great Britain

Olympic Games - Men's Basketball - Brazil vs Great Britain

Projected line: 161 points

I watched today's early game between Russia and China and I was once again impressed with the Russian defense, as not only they put a lot of pressure on the ball handler, as they also have great ability in closing out on the shooters. China struggled to get good looks and now I can understand better why Great Britain only shot a ridiculous mark of 4-26 behind the line against them. The British game is focused on the outside and against a tough and gritty perimeter defensive team like Russia, they heavily struggled! Nevertheless, they were able to score 75 points because they were aggressive and went 29 times to the free throw line.

Luckily for Great Britain, Brazil doesn't offer the same problems that Russia gave to them. The Brazilian defense isn't even near the level of Russia, especially on the backcourt, where Huertas, Barbosa and Garcia aren't top class defenders, actually they are quite the opposite! Luol Deng played 39 minutes in the first game and attempted 27 shots (more than 35% of the team attempts). He struggled to be efficient by hitting just 8 of 27, but once again he was very well defended by Kirilenko and his team mates, while today he will be guarded by undersized guards Garcia and/or Barbosa.

On the other side, Brazil will want to push up the pace and use a lot of P&R plays with Huertas feeding the ball to the big guys. Great Britain isn't disciplined enough on defense to do the right rotations and Russian guard Shved had 13 assists by himself against them because of that. I expect Huertas to have double digits assists numbers as well on this game that promises to be an exciting one, with both teams having offensive edges on the court. Therefore, I'll be taking the Over on this contest.

Olympic Games 07/31: Men's Basketball - Lithuania vs Nigeria

Olympic Games - Men's Basketball - Lithuania vs Nigeria

Projected lines: 157 points | Lithuania by 12 points

Nigeria shocked the world in the beginning at this month by qualifying for the Olympics and they have a roster filled of some NBA and CBB players, but their flaws were evident against Tunisia, in their first game of this competition. Their strength is on their frontcourt, where they usually dominate the glass and they had 20 offensive rebounds against Tunisia. They are also a good pressure defensive team that creates turnovers and they basically score via putbacks or in transition because in the half court, it is just too painful to watch them play. They shot just 33.3% FG against a team like Tunisia! They also only had 9 assists, so ball movement is an unknown word for the Nigerian team. This makes them struggle a lot in half court games.

On the other hand, Lithuania was crushed by Argentina in the first game. The Lithuanians has some problems in defending pick n roll plays and they tried a zone defense to prevent Argentina from scoring down low, but they ended up being humiliated by an incredibly sharp ball movement from Argentina. Both Ginobili and Prigioni are excellent ball handlers and they easily dished the right pass to the open man, especially Delfino who shot 6-9 from behind the line. But Nigeria doesn't have skilled guards, as in fact they usually only have one quality shooter (Derrick Obasohan or Chamberlin Oguchi) on the floor, so I don't think Nigeria is quipted to punish Lithuania in the way that Argentina did. Also note that Lithuania performed well offensively against Argentina, as they shot 46.7% FG and 20-22 from from the line. They still remain a good offensive team that runs plays quite smoothly.

Lithuania will aim to slow down the pace and keep this game on a half-court type of affair because they are way better on offense than Nigeria in half court sets. Finally, the Lithuanians also have a revenge factor a mind, as Lithuania is known internationally for not playing hard against inferior class opponents and that's mostly why they lost against Nigeria in the qualifying tournament, in a game where they only "needed" to not lose by more than 10 points to qualify for the following stage. Also looking at the way they lost against Argentina in the first game, I expect a bounce back from them and so, I believe Lithuania will win this game by double digits points. Also Nigeria plays in a really slow pace, so with their continued troubles in the half court, I believe the current totals line is just set way too high for this contest and so, I'll also take the Under in here.

Olympic Games 07/31: Men's Basketball - Spain vs Australia

Olympic Games - Men's Basketball - Spain vs Australia

Projected lines: 149 points | Spain by 8 points

Spain had an easy win against China in an atypical game from the Spanish team: no defense and winning via outscoring. Still, the Spanish team had problems at the start of the game with just 3 points in the first 5 minutes, with some Chinese players in foul trouble, China changed their defense into zone and Spain torched them with a crispy ball movement and a deadly 3pts shooting. It was just too easy for them, as they shot 11-19 3pts! China was too soft on defense and Spain let the Chinese team play loose as well.

Now on this game against Australia, things will be different as we are talking about a much more aggressive team in both ends of the floor and that will make Spain have more attention on defense. Australia lost against Brazil mostly due to their high number of turnovers, but defensively they did a good job by allowing the Brazilian team to shoot just 41.2 % FG. As I've referred on my preview, Australia is a very well organized team and with a great motor, so it won't be easy for any team to squash them.

I've watched the two games between these two teams before this competition and in both occasions, Australia was very competitive and they had real chances of winning the games. The key was always a good defensive positioning and tough play in every singly play. According to my numbers, both games were slow paced ones, so I'm expecting a similar scenario for today. Spain will be missing Navarro today, so they'll be without some of their outside shooting ability for today. My projected line for this contest is 149 points, while I expect Australia to lose by single digits points, so I'll take both Australia and the Under in here.

Pick: 3 units (Single Dime Play) on Over 129 @ -105 / 1.95 on Pinnacle

Olympic Games 07/30 - Women's Basketball - Australia vs France

Olympic Games - Women's Basketball - Australia vs France

Australia had some problems in their first match against the British team, who fought a lot throughout the whole game. The frenetic pace of the British didn't help Australia at all, as Australia struggles in playing in fast paced games. Due to that, they committed 23 turnovers and one of their best players, Liz Cambage, played just 10 minutes due to foul trouble.

On the other hand, France is coming from a tight game against Brazil, where they only got a good lead in the 4th quarter. The French side plays in a more traditional way, so they will be a better fit for Australia than the British side was. These two teams faced each other twice in recent friendlies, with Australia winning one of them by 69-59 and in the other way, France won by 64-58, in a game where two of the best Australian players, Lauren Jackson and Suzy Batkovic, didn't play, something that allowed France to overpower Australia in the frontcourt of that game. That won't happen today and I expect Australia to comfortably prevail against France on this contest and with both teams being able to produce some efficiency on offense. Therefore, I'll take both Australia and the Over in here.

Olympic Games - Women's Basketball - Czech Republic vs Turkey

Czech Republic was upset by China in the first game, but the Chinese team has already crushed Croatia in their second game as well, showing that they are at a superior level than these two teams. With this upset, Czech Republic really can't afford another loss today and they are a much better team than Turkey, as shown in a friendly game back in June, where the Czech team destroyed Turkey with a 30 points win. Therefore, I believe Czech Republic will cover this short spread today.

Olympic Games 07/29: Great Britain vs United Arab Emirates

Olympic Games - Men's Soccer - Great Britain vs United Arab Emirates

After a 1-1 draw against Senegal in their first match in this competition, the British team really needs to have a good win today against UAE and I believe they have all the necessary conditions to achieve exactly that. Even though Great Britain might not be a gold medal contender on this competition, they have an interesting roster led by experienced players such as Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy or Micah Richards and this should be more than enough to beat a UAE team in a completely terrible spot for today.

UAE is coming from a 1-2 loss against Uruguay, in a match where they played above their expected level, as the books had set a -2 handicap for Uruguay in that game. They showed some potential especially on offense, but they lack tactical discipline and experience at this level, as every player from their squad play in their national league. This lack of experience makes them commit some errors and facing the English crowd on a Sunday match played in Wembley is probably the worst spot they could face today, especially when they aren't used to play at this level of competition and they had just 2 days off to rest between matches.

I believe Great Britain will have a huge edge in terms of tactical discipline, experience and physical condition, especially in the 2nd half, something that should allow the home team to have a comfortable win today. Therefore, I'll take them on the spread today.

Olympic Games 07/29: Men's Soccer- Spain vs Honduras

Olympic Games - Men's Soccer- Spain vs Honduras

Spain very surprisingly lost their first match against Japan, in a match where the Japanese team was tactically brilliant by not giving any space to the Spanish squad. To make things worse, a Spanish player was sent off still in the first half and as much as Spain tried to come back in the second half, they just couldn't get through the solid defense of the Japanese team.

So, the Spanish team has a perfect spot today to bounce back, especially when they really need to win this match if they want to qualify for the knock-out stage. They will face an Honduran team, which is the complete opposite of Japan. Honduras played against Morocco in their first match with a wide open attitude, with very little tactical discipline and because of that, they committed a lot of errors throughout the whole match. Against a Spanish team that doesn't use the "tiki taka style" unlike their national "A" team, but a more vertical style, I believe Spain will have a lot of opportunities to score today and they will eventually get an easy win today over Honduras. I'm taking Spain on the spread today.

Olympic Games 07/29: Men's Soccer- Mexico vs Gabon

Olympic Games - Men's Soccer- Mexico vs Gabon

Even though Gabon showed some interesting moves on offense on their first match against Switzerland, they also showed little experience on their defense, with silly mistakes and bad conditioning which made them struggle during the 2nd half until a Swiss player was sent off.

On the other hand, Mexico started this competition with a 0-0 draw against an underrated South Korean team. The Mexicans were sloppy in the first half and they were surprised by the Asians. However, I doubt they will do the same mistake once again and considering that they are a much better team than Gabon, I believe Mexico will prove that on the field and get a comfortable win today. I'm taking Mexico to win today.

Olympic Games 07/29: Men's Basketball - Brazil vs Australia

Olympic Games - Men's Basketball - Brazil vs Australia

Brazil has a good team especially in the frontcourt and in the PG position, with Marcelinho Huertas. However, they have a lot of problems in handling the ball and they have no depth in the bench. At the same time, Australia is a very underrated team. I watched some games of them recently and they really impressed me, especially in how well they are organized. They have a great coach and all plays they run on offense are smooth.

These two teams played a friendly game recently and Brazil won by 87-71. This was a game where Australia actually shot better than Brazil (46% vs 44% FG), but they committed 21 turnovers, while Brazil committed just 7. I believe Australia didn't want to play their best in that game or at least try not to show their strategy for today's Olympic debut game, especially when in the following day, with some starters playing over 30 minutes, they defeated France. I expect a tight game in here and so, I'll take Australia today.

Olympic Games 07/28: Women's Basketball - Great Britain vs Australia

Olympic Games - Women's Basketball - Great Britain vs Australia

After tracking all the friendly games played before the Olympics, it's clear that the British team is clearly the team that plays with a faster pace, even faster than the US team. If we had to compare the British team to a WNBA team, they would be the Phoenix Mercury of FIBA.

On the other hand, Australia is the second best team on this competition and they have two great post players in Lauren Jackson and Liz Cambage. These two teams faced each other on a friendly in mid-July, with Australia scoring 42 points in the paint. Australia won't have problems in scoring on a fast paced game and so, this line of about 140 points doesn't fully represent the quick pace and the efficiency Australia will have on this game. Therefore, I will be taking the Over on this contest.

Olympic Games 07/28: Women's Basketball - Brazil vs France

Olympic Games - Women's Basketball - Brazil vs France

Brazil would be the main contender for the bronze medal if Iziane Castro Marques, one of their best guards, wasn't expelled from the team after bringing her boyfriend to the Olympic village. Without Marques, they lose some strength on their backcourt, but they continue being a good team, especially on the frontcourt where they have Atlanta Dream's center Erika de Souza, one of the most dominant players in the world. With Erika leading the team down low, Brazil will surely get some easy points in the paint.

On the other hand, France has also their best player down low with Sandrine Gruda. These two teams faced each other 8 days ago in a friendly game, with France winning by 10 points. In that game, Erika played horribly and got fouled out, playing just 21 minutes of the game. Gruda took advantage of that and had 17 points and 11 rebounds. This was such a poor performance from Brazil that in the following day, against the more powerful Australian team, Erika bounced back with 24 points and shooting 10-17 GH, while Australian center Lauren Jackson (one of the best players in the world) was stopped by shooting just 1-11 FG.

With Erika at their normal level, I expect Brazil to be a tough opponent today and I wouldn't be even surprised if they win this game outright. Therefore, I'll take Brazil plus the points today.

Olympic Games 07/28: Men's Cycling Road Race

Olympic Games - Men's Cycling Road Race - 5AM EST

The men's cycling road race will be run on a flat parcours that should really make the winner of this race be discussed on a sprint. There is just one difficulty on the profile (9 x Box Hill - 4.58 km @3.4%, final climb ends at 48.9km from the finish), so even if some teams like Spain or the Netherlands would like to make this race quite selective, I don't think they will be able to make such thing happen with such an easy profile, especially with the home team of Great Britain having four great riders in Bradley Wiggins (Tour de France winner), Chris Froome (Tour de France runner up), David Miller (former ITT world champion) and Ian Stannard (current UK champion and one of the hardest working domestiques in the peloton) to help Mark Cavendish in getting into the final km of the race in perfect conditions to discuss the sprint for the win.

This is exactly what I think it will happen. Even with some quality riders trying to escape the peloton, the British team should be able to get everybody back in the peloton on the flat roads near London to make this race be discussed in a mass sprint. When that happens, as we saw in the Champs-Élysés last Sunday, Mark Cavendish is just too good for everybody, including other good sprinters such as Andre Greipel, Matthew Goss or Sacha Modolo. Cavendish won last year's World Championships and the Summer Olympics' Test Event in the roads of London on similar circumstances and therefore, with the help of such a great team, I expect him to give Great Britain a gold medal in the first official day of the Olympic Games.

Olympic Games Soccer Play: Gabon vs Switzerland

Olympic Games - Men's Soccer - Group B - Gabon vs Switzerland

***DOUBLE DIME PLAY***

The Swiss youth teams have been excellent in the last few years, as it could be seen in the last Under-21 European Championships last year, where they were runner ups to Spain. Their roster is formed by a group of very talented youngsters, already playing some major minutes in the most competitive leagues in Europe such as the German and Italian leagues, while others are already key pieces in some of the best Swiss teams. They will be missing Xherdan Shaqri and Granit Xhaka in this competition and this removes a lot of creativity to the team, but I don't think this will be a major problem against the completely inexperienced Gabonese team.

Gabon is very surprisingly on this competition after winning the African qualifying event. However, we are talking about a team who has never played a major competition before and whose most of their players still play in the Gabonese league, whose competitive level is ridiculous in comparison to the competition the Swiss players experience in Europe. This difference of experience and competitive level between Switzerland and Gabon will surely help the Swiss team in having huge edges in terms of tactical discipline, defensive focus and even physical condition, especially in the last 20 minutes of the game.

I believe Gabon will heavily struggle today on their debut match on their first International competition ever, while the much more experienced Switzerland squad will take advantage of the silly errors Gabon will eventually commit to comfortably win this match. Therefore, I'll take the Swiss team to win today.

2012 Olympic Games: Men's Basketball Preview

Men's Basketball Tournament:

There isn't any doubt that barring a shock, the United States of America will be able to win the Gold Medal once again. In fact, most sportsbooks don't even offer odds for the US to get the Gold Medal (currently Pinnacle has them at -730 to win outright), but they have props instead asking for example if they will be able to win a game by more than 50 points or if they will trail in the 2nd half of any game during the competition. The confidence is so big in the US team that Kobe Bryant even said they could beat the 1992 Dream Team in a game.

The biggest strength of the US squad will definitely be their depth. We are talking about a competition where teams will play every game on a 1-day rest spot and the depth from the US team will punish their opponents, especially in the later stages of the competition, when the players have already a lot of minutes on their legs. Their offense is merely simple, with a few off ball movements and no low post up moves. At least, they aren't committing a lot of turnovers (in their four recent friendly games, they committed just 12, 11, 9 and 13 turnovers) and besides Kevin Durant, who is consistently great, they have been streaky from behind the line. However, it's on their defense that the US team really turns into the best team in the world by a huge margin, with their ability to create turnovers and convert those takeaways in fast break chances. In their first three friendly games, they forced their opponents to commit 27, 26 and 27 turnovers, while in their most recent friendly against Argentina, they forced just 13 turnovers. It will be in their ability to force turnovers and give them easy chances to score that the US team that will allow them to blowout their opponents on this competition. However, it has to be noted that Tyson Chandler is their only big men and the team's biggest problem is in defending pick n' rolls, as they have been using players in the frontcourt that are most used to play at the SF position (Kevin Durant & Carmelo Anthony) and they lack the defensive routines to defend this kind of play. This is why we watched Brazilian PG Marcelinho Huertas punish them with 13 assists, while the entire US team was only able to combine a total of 11 assists.

If there is a team who can eventually beat the US team, that team is clearly Spain. As of now, the line for their friendly game is at -11, by far the smallest line the US have had in their friendly games. The Spanish team is composed by a core of players and a coach who have been working together for many years now, so they know perfectly how to play with each other. However, they have suffered some injury problems, first with Ricky Rubio who will be out of this competition, then Rudy Fernandez was injured for a while and by watching some friendly games from Spain, I realize that he isn't at this best even though he looked better in the last games and finally, Marc Gasol hasn't played the team's last friendly games due to injury. Spain has a very good frontcourt with Marc Gasol, Pau Gasol, Serge Ibaka and Felipe Reyes and it will be tough to score on the inside against them, especially with Ibaka's playing style fitting even better under FIBA rules. Despite this strength down low, Spain is a jump shooting team who will attempt more than 20 treys per game, with Navarro, Calderon, Rudy and Llull being their best shooters. The Spanish team values the ball possession and it's rare for them to commit a high number of turnovers, as seen in the last five friendly games, where they committed just 6, 5, 14, 8 and 8 turnovers. So, if Spain doesn't turn the ball over and hit their outside shots, then they may really have a real chance of upsetting the US. They are a great team down the stretch due to their experience and they will clearly tough as nails to be beaten, even in their games against the United States.

After these two teams, there are a group of good team that can be considered as outsiders. Just like the US team, however on a clearly different level, France has a good number of good wing players who can play on the perimeter or they are also big enough to play on the frontcourt: Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum and Kevin Seraphin. This turns the French team into a great rebounding team, but at the same time they are quite poor on the outside shooting. I remember watching their friendly game against Spain where they shot just 4-23 from the 3pts line, for example. Tony Parker is clearly the leader of this team and he is one of the best players in the world under FIBA rules because he knows how to attack the lane. One of the problems France has been dealing with is the fact that Parker was their only good guard, so he had to play over 40 minutes in almost every game. But now they have Nando de Colo to compliment him, just like it will happen in San Antonio next season. With Joakim Noah playing (he's out due to an ankle injury), France would have an even better frontcourt, but that wouldn't solve their biggest weakness: their perimeter game.

On the other hand, Argentina still has the same core of players from their Olympic title in 2004. This means that we are now talking about an old team with little depth. They can hang around against anybody, but to ask them to play their games with just 1 day off to rest and with Ginobili, Scola, Nocioni and Delfino playing more than 30 minutes per game is just too much. Argentina will definitely rely on their 3pts shooting and their outside shooting will define if they will succeed or fail on this tournament.

Russia is a complete outsider on this tournament. They needed to play in the preliminary tournament to qualify for the Olympics, but they did it with distinction by winning all their games. They are one of the best passing teams in the competition and Andrei Kirilenko is their best player and the true playmaker of the team, as he can certainly do it all for the team. Almost the whole roster plays in Russian clubs, so they will be an enigmatic team for many. Therefore, a bronze medal isn't certainly out of question, but neither is an early elimination, as nobody knows how good they really are.

Brazil is another dark horse to win the bronze medal and they have already put a scare on the US team in a recent friendly game between these two teams. Marcelino Huertas is a true playmaker and his passing ability is perfect to feed a good big men unit formed by Nene Hilario, Tiago Splitter and Anderson Varejao. They will definitely run hundreds of pick and roll plays during the tournament and they have two perimeter guys who are never afraid to shoot in Leandro Barbosa and Alex Garcia. However, they lack depth and besides Huertas, the remaining Brazilian players have problems in taking care of the ball.

Lithuania is another team who is coming from the preliminary tournament and after a shocking early loss in the group stage against Nigeria, they bounced back and eventually won all their remaining games. They are a young team who is vastly inconsistent, especially now that one of their leaders, the center Robertas Javtokas, got injured and won't play the Olympics. The Lithuanian team plays on a fast paced style and Jonas Valanciunas, who will play in Toronto next season, can become a big piece for this team if he's able to control himself and stay out of foul trouble. They have depth on their roster, but they lack star power with Linus Kleiza, Rimantas Kaukenas and Mantas Kalnietis being good role players, but far from being top players.

Australia is probably the best team in the competition from the group of teams who don't really have any real good player. The reason for that is that they are extremely well coached by Brett Brown, who is not only the Australian national head coach, but also an assistant coach of Gregg Popovich in the San Antonio Spurs. Australia plays very smart basketball in both ends of the floor, with Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and David Andersen being their best players. They won't overpower any top team, but they will hang around in the games due to their well organized basketball. Just ask Spain, who had to fight a lot to finally be able to defeat the Australian squad in the two friendly games they played against each other.

Great Britain is playing the competition due to being the host of the Olympics, however it's more than clear that they would never qualify for the Olympics if they had to, as they lack quality to play at this level. They tried to bring NBA players to their roster like Ben Gordon or Byron Mullens to play alongside Luol Deng, but they ended up refusing the offer. The British team is a jump shooting one who buries trey after trey. They lost by 40 points against the US on a friendly game, in a game where GB actually had a great night on the outside shooting with 12-23 3pts! However, the lack of guards and post players will prevent them to go anywhere on this tournament.

China will be using an experienced squad which is basically the same team that reached the Quarter Finals in Beijing four years ago. Their problem is that the player that is missing from Beijing is Yao Ming and without him, China is definitely a much weaker team than they were when Yao Ming was still playing. They are an undersized team, with no superstars, but don't underestimate them, as in the last World Championships, already without Yao Ming, they fought a lot and gave Russia, Greece, Puerto Rico and Lithuania some scares.

The last two teams who will be playing this competition will be two teams from Africa: Tunisia and Nigeria. Tunisia is the African champion, after beating Angola in the final of the 2011 African Championship. Even though Nigeria was 3rd in the African Championships, it's clear to me that Nigeria is now the best team coming from Africa, after having recruited some players like Al-Farouq Aminu and Ike Diogu for their squad. Nigeria qualified for the Olympics after being 3rd in the preliminary competition and their mega upset win over Greece in that tournament shows that they are a dangerous team thanks to a great rebounding effort and a terrific work rate. On the other hand, Tunisia is clearly the weakest team in the competition and I don't expect nothing from them besides getting blown out in every game they play.

Therefore, I expect an Olympic tournament full of exciting games, as barring the United States and Spain, who seem too good for the remaining teams, and Tunisia, who seems to be the worst team in the bunch by far, there are a lot of teams who can play good basketball and make this competition one of the most exciting of these Olympics.
