MLB - 981 Minnesota Twins @ 982 Seattle Mariners
(Starting Pitchers: S. Diamond vs J. Vargas)
Seattle dominated the Twins yesterday on the first game of this series, in a game where they took advantage of a day off and the fact that Blackburn was the Twins' SP. However, this time, the Mariners will face a much tougher SP, as Diamond has been really good lately. He is coming from a no-decision against Tamp Bay on his last outing, where he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. He has some excellent command, as he has issues two or fewer walks in all his 18 starts, while he has just walked three batters on his four starts! He seems confident and motivated and on his past four starts, he has gone 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA, 0.956 WHIP, 18/3 in K/BB ratio, in a total of 30.1 IP innings. He has just allowed 3, 2 and 3 earned runs on his last three games and this will be a good matchup for him, as Seattle is just #28 in the league in hitting against LH pitchers.
The problem for the Twins tonight is that Seattle will also have a very good SP on the mount. Vargas has just allowed one run or less in five of his last eight outings and he is coming from outdueling Jared Weaver on his last game, where he allowed just one run and seven hits in 8.1 IP against the Angels. Vargas just keeps dominating his opponents and he has now nine consecutive quality starts, while being 6-1 with a 1.88 ERA, 0.985 WHIP and 43/16 in K/BB ratio in 67 innings. His FIP over his last five games was 2.26, 4.22, 2.38, 2.97 and 2.93 FIP, therefore I don't believe Minnesota will be able to do anything today against such an in-form Vargas.
With both pitchers being in great form right now and with both teams not being exactly powerhouses on offense, I believe this will be a pitchers duel with very few runs scored. Therefore, I'll be taking the Under in here. In such a close game due to both SP dominating the hitters, I believe the Twins' superior hitting may allow them to make the upset in here and so, I'll be taking Minnesota in here as well.
