This is a good physical spot for both teams. Detroit may be playing their third game in four nights, but this is a home-home spot, while the Clippers will continue their road trip tonight, but without having a heavy schedule. The Clippers' offense has been lethal, especially when they are able to have success on their transition plays. They shot 12-14 FG on transitions, 7-10 FG on cuts and that resulted in 111 points scored against Milwaukee. They didn't even need to shoot a lot from the outside to get this very high number of points: 27-42 FG at the rim, 6-16 FG from 16-23 feet and 5-11 treys!
Detroit is #2 on transition defense and #6 on cuts defense, however they are #27 on pick and roll ball handler defense and #30 on post up defense, two areas where the Clippers' offense is #4 and #7 respectively. So, even though the Clippers might not be able to have success on their fast breaks tonight, this won't be a problem as they will dominate on their pick and rolls and post ups. Another offensive edge for the Clippers in here will be with their second unit that has a lot of offensive skills going head to head with the Pistons' second unit that is a catastrophe on defense.
The Pistons is coming from a game against Indiana, where they scored just 77 points. Detroit wasn't able to score in transition, with just 6 fast break points and 2-7 FG on transitions. The merit has to be given to the Pacers' defense that by inserting an extremely slow pace to the game limited very well Detroit's transition game, while defending the Pistons' pick and rolls remarkably as well, as Detroit shot 3-17 FG on pick and roll ball handler plays! The Clippers won't have the same gameplan as Indiana, as they want to score in transition and so, they want the game pace to be high. The Clippers' defend well on the inside, as they are #13 on rim defense, #2 in points in the paint allowed and #7 on post up defense. However, they aren't as good on transition defense and they will allow the Pistons to have some easy points tonight.
I expect this game to have a high pace and with Detroit struggling on defending the opposing guards and with the Clippers allowing Detroit to have a good number of fast break points, I believe this will be a high scoring game and so, I'll be taking the Over in here.
