New Orleans is coming from a home loss against Minnesota, where coach Monty Williams blamed his team's defensive problems on lack of focus:
"Our defense is not even close to what we are used to around here,’’ Williams said "That is a reflection of me and my coaching. I need to do a better job and get in there and figure out which guys are going to fight for this organization; that is not something that we are seeing on a consistent basis.’’
They will now go to Portland to face a Blazers team that will be without Wesley Matthews tonight. Matthews has been a very important piece of the team's offense, as with him on court the team is averaging 110.2 offensive rate, but without him, the Blazers' offense are just averaging 89.2 offensive rate.
New Orleans allowed 70 points in the paint against Minnesota, but Portland is a more finesse team and they won't try to explore the Hornets' interior defense. On the other hand, Portland is struggling at defending the paint this season, while Damian Lillard is also struggling on defense, however New Orleans likes to shoot from the perimeter and Greivis Vasquez lacks the speed to fully explore Lillard's defensive problems.
These two teams like to play at a slow pace, so this game will definitely be a low scoring game. Both teams don't score in transition, so the points on this contest will have to come from their execution on set plays. I have a defensive bounce back from New Orleans' defense in here, something that will turn this contest into a low scoring affair. Therefore, I'll be taking the Under in here.
