After some struggling outings, Haren is coming from two great starts in a row, where he allowed just two and one runs against Detroit and Seattle. However, I expect him to struggle much more today. Haren throws cutters in 40% of his pitches and the Athletics are the best team in hitting against those over the last 30 days. He has been having a very inconsistent season and against a confident team like Oakland, who should be able to pound his cutters, I believe Haren will struggle tonight.
On the other hand, the Athletics will start McCarthy who is also coming from two good outings against the Rays and the Red Sox. However, just like Haren, he should struggle today due to his pitching style. McCarthy also throws a lot of cutters and the red hot Angels are the #2 team in the league in hitting against those over the last 30 days (OAK is #1), besides being #1 in this stat in the whole season. Therefore, I believe the red hot Angels will be pounding McCarthy today.
With both pitchers likely to see their cutters being attacked by two lineups who are very good at hitting against this kind of pitch, I expect this game to be indeed a high scoring game and therefore, I'll be taking the Over in here.
