Brooklyn easily defeated Atlanta on the road last week, but they were on a nice spot, while Atlanta was coming from an overtime game at Boston the night before. For tonight, the Nets had 3 days off to rest for this contest, while Atlanta has also a nice spot, especially in comparison to their spot on their previous game against Brooklyn. Atlanta has a huge speed edge on the backcourt and especially on the frontcourt against Brooklyn and they need to take advantage of that. In fact, even on a terrible spot, the Hawks were able to score 18 fast break points against Brooklyn last week! The Nets are #15 in the league on transition defense, but they are currently regressing, as they have allowed 1.20 PPP since the All Star break and 1.26 PPP on their last 5 games! Atlanta is also very good at scoring at the rim (#2 in the league in FG% on this area) and they will have a good edge on this area over a Nets's rim defense that has allowed 67% FG from this area to their opponents since the All Star break! Considering their speed edge, Atlanta has an excellent opportunity to have a good offensive game tonight.
On the other side, Brooklyn is shooting well from the 3pts line, but Atlanta's perimeter defense is excellent with just 33.8% 3pts allowed on their last 10 games! The Nets have been good on defensive rebounding as well, but they are committing too many turnovers (15.1% TO/rate since All Star break)! Atlanta is able to put some pressure on the ball handler and quickly leave in transition, so they should be able to take advantage of Brooklyn's turnovers today. I believe Atlanta will be super competitive today and this is pretty much a 50/50 game for me. Therefore, I'll be taking the Hawks plus the points tonight.
