NBA Premium Play 03/16: Cleveland Cavaliers @ San Antonio Spurs

NBA - 507 Cleveland Cavaliers @ 508 San Antonio Spurs

Projected Line: 204 points | San Antonio by 20 points

Cleveland had a similar situation last night as the one Charlotte also had. The Cavaliers played at Dallas and they were competitive so much that they were up by 1 point at the end of the third quarter. Thanks to that, Coach Byron Scott used all his starters for over 30 minutes, with the starting backcourt of Dion Waiters and Shaun Livingston playing 37 and 38 minutes! Of course, this put Cleveland on a very tough spot tonight, as they will play a back to back game at San Antonio.

The Spurs will show some urgency in dominating tonight's game. They got crushed at Minnesota, then they struggled at home against Dallas on a tough spot for them, on a game where I suspected that the Mavericks would be competitive and they were by losing the game by just one point. San Antonio's head coach Gregg Popovich likened his team’s at-times sluggish showing to “playing in mud.” He sees no clear path out of it, save for simply forging on. “You just keep going. You keep playing. You keep practicing. You come through it,” Popovich said. San Antonio's players emerged from a film session Friday repeating a need for better movement on offense and more attention to detail on defense.

If we combine the loss at home against Portland with their loss at Minnesota, it's easy to understand why San Antonio has some urgency in showing some dominance over a lowly team like Cleveland tonight. The Cavaliers's defense is terrible against pick and roll plays, they are the worst team in the league in post up defense and they are #24 in the league on transition defense. They had some nice defensive numbers on their last three games, but that was mostly due to the fact that they were playing against two poor offensive teams in Washington and Toronto, while on their last game, they faced a tired Mavericks team. Now against a rested Spurs's offense, Cleveland's poor defense is going to get exposed and they will get crushed tonight.

On the previous game played between these two teams this season, San Antonio won at Cleveland by 96-95 with a late shot by Kawhi Leonard, in a game where I took the Cavaliers. This was their last game before the All Star break and San Antonio was tired after such a long road trip. Some of the Spurs's players were also returning to the team after injuries, so they were lacking some offensive flow at the time. This time, I expect San Antonio to make a statement at home and crush the lowly Cavaliers quite impressively. Therefore, I'll be taking San Antonio tonight. As I expect the Spurs to have a massive offensive game tonight against the horrible Cavaliers's defense, I'll be also taking the Over in here as well.
