UEFA Euro 2012 Preview: France

France presents a very young and inexperienced team on this competition and this is probably their main weakness, but at the same time, they really have the potential to be an outside contender for this tournament. In case you don't know, the French side is coming for this tournament riding a 20-game unbeaten streak…

Laurent Blanc is the National Head Coach and he is emulating the same tactics that France once used when they ruled the world of soccer in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and he was a key member of that team leading the defense. Obviously it was easier to win back then when they had Vieira, Zidane and Henry leading them, but the receipt is the same for this tournament.

France plays in a traditional back four formation that are supported by a powerful double pivot formation in front of them. Like I’ve said, this is exactly the same tactic that France used a decade ago, the difference is that Didier Deschamps and Patrick Vieira were better players than M’Villa, Cabaye or Diarra will ever be, but still the double pivot formation will make hard for the opponent to dominate the midfield because France will always play with two strong and physical dominant players.

On the front, France has a powerful combination of speed, technique and flexibility. Karim Benzema will be the lonely striker that will be feed by 3 players behind him - these three players will likely be Nasri, Ribéry and Malouda! These players all can switch their position and create mismatches on the field because they are good dribblers and especially Ribéry is in great form going for this tournament.

Strenght(s):

  • Speed! The 4 players on the front are all mobile with great technique and they can make some serious damage on the opposing defenses. The double pivot formation behind them is basically to work on defense and release the front four from a heavy workload duty on the defensive end. Probably France has the most dangerous attack in the competition alongside with Germany and Netherlands.

Weakness(es):

  • Defense! France suffered two huge blows on their defense with the absences of Abidal and Rami for this competition. Mexes will lead this unit, but I don’t think this is a good thing because he is a bit inconsistent and prone to commit silly errors. When compared to the front four, this unit is in a lower level of quality and doesn’t have the proper depth as well.
