Even though the Mavericks are 3-0 in this series they are not dominating the Lakers! In G3, the Lakers led the game 79-71 w/7:35 to go or 85-78 w/5:05 to go…then the Mavericks were super clutch by hitting multiple treys and tough shots down the stretch.
It was a tough loss for the Lakers because they had the edge in multiple facets of the game: less turnovers, more rebounds and more points in the paint! For me the X factor of that game was….the fatigue of the Lakers starters! Ron Artest did not play and Lamar Odom was the starting SF…so far so good as the Lakers were playing well.
However down the stretch I’ve watched some poorly defensive rotations from both Odom and Gasol that left wide open Stojakovic and Nowitzki behind the arc! For today, Artest is back and obviously Odom will lead the Lakers 2nd unit. This is extremely important because we all know that the Mavericks bench is way better than the Lakers and Odom is the only truly good player coming off the bench.
Also what the Mavericks did in game 3 is extremely dangerous for them! They almost didn’t care in attacking inside the post! They scored only 8 points in the paint in the entire second half!
In fact, here are the Mavs FG’s attempts at the rim + from 3-9 feet in every game:
Game 1: 16-30 FG
Game 2: 17-34 FG
Game 3: 10-16 FG
Now, here are the Mavs FG’s attempts from 16-23 feet + treys:

As we can see, the Mavericks game plan was all about hitting shots from the outside! They attempted 67 FG’s, 46 of them were from the outside – a whopping mark of 68.5%!!!
I expect the Lakers to bring the same game plan for today: attack the paint and establish their game down low. The presence of Artest is vital for them because he is a good perimeter defender. The Mavericks will need to make tough shots once again today but those shots won’t happen every day and that’s why I’m taking the Lakers today + Under.
