MLB - 953 San Diego Padres @ 954 Atlanta Braves
(Starting Pitchers: J. Marquis vs K. Medlen)
After an upset loss in the first game of the series, Atlanta bounced back with two easy wins and they'll try to finish this series with another comfortable win over the Padres. They'll use Medlen tonight as their SP and he looks like their new ace, as he has allowed just one run on his last three outings against Miami, Houston and the NY Mets. He was expected to be out of the rotation once Hanson returned from injury, but Medlen has been pitching so well that Atlanta is currently using a 6-man rotation instead. He's 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA and a 16:4 K:BB ratio on his last three starts, with his stats of these three outings plus a relief job in the middle of those outings being a 2.28 ERA and a 2.72 FIP, which shows that he is really in excellent form and that he should dominate the unimpressive Padres offense tonight.
San Diego will start Marquis and he is coming from an excellent outing against Pittsburgh, where he allowed just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. He is 5-1 since the All-Star break and he has walked just eight batters while having 26 strikeouts in 40 innings. Also his opponents are just hitting .216 BA since the break, while they were hitting .314 before. However, he should be in trouble tonight, as he struggles against LH batters. He's an okay pitcher against RH batters with .273 BA, .444 SLG and 3.91 FIP, but when he faces LH batters, his numbers drop to .281 BA, .509 SLG and 5.68 FIP! The Braves have a great LH batters and that's the reason why they're generally so good against RH pitchers: Bourn, Freeman, Chipper, McCann and Heyward are all LH batters! In 127 AB, the current Braves roster is .291 BA and .861 OPS against Marquis and so, he should be in trouble once again tonight.
With Medlen ready to have another great performance and Marquis ready to struggle against the Braves' LH hitters, I believe Atlanta will have their third consecutive easy win over San Diego tonight and so, I'll take the Braves in here tonight.
